It’s funny how some people were fully expecting Captain Marvel to bomb at the box office because “Brie Larson hates men,” “it’s a feminist propaganda” or whatever it is people were screaming about all over social media. With its $US455 million global opening last weekend, Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie became the biggest March opening ever and the sixth biggest global opening weekend of all time.
And now, after two weekends, Captain Marvel has continued to go from strength to strength. As of a few hours ago, it has raked in more than $US 910 million at the global box office. The film is now the 7th highest grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after jetting past Spider-Man: Homecoming (US$ 880 million) and is inches away from Captain America: Civil War‘s $US 1.1 billion global cume.
On top of that, the Brie Larson starrer is also the 10th highest grossing superhero movie of all time, zooming past Batman V Superman ($US 867 million), Wonder Woman ($US 821 million), Deadpool ($US 801 million) and Venom ($US 853 million). In other words, the film has already outgrossed every single non-Disney owned Marvel movie and all the DC movies besides Aquaman, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises.
Unless the film experiences a major dropoff (and I don’t see why it would), it should jet past the $US 1 billion mark with relative ease. Captain Marvel is currently the 52nd highest grossing movie of all time.
Over at the Malaysian box office, after two weekends, Captain Marvel has raked in approximately $US 8.4 million (RM 34 million).
In separate news, Jordan Peele’s masterful horror film, Us is off to a stellar start at the global box office, grossing over $US 86 million in its opening weekend with a mere $US 20 million budget.
