Star Wars: Episode IX is easily one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, right up there with Avengers: Endgame. Whether you love the Disney era of Star Wars or not, you’re most likely going to rush out to see it opening night, especially since the director of The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams is back at the helm. But did you know that Episode IX will be the end of the Skywalker saga?
Recently, Oscar Isaac appeared on The Today Show to discuss the upcoming Netflix film Triple Frontier, where he stars alongside Ben Affleck and Charlie Hunnam. Naturally, the conversation steered towards Star Wars: Episode IX. While Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron in the franchise couldn’t reveal much, he did mention that Episode IX will be a definitive conclusion to the Skywalker storyline.
“It is the end of the entire Skywalker saga. Nine stories. This is the culmination of the thing. I think what J.J.[Abrams] has done, and really the whole Lucasfilm team, is going to be incredibly fulfilling. It’s also special for us because you get to learn a lot more things about these characters.”
This news may not come as a huge surprise, but one can’t help but wonder what will happen to the new characters introduced in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi? I’m of course talking about Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren? Could they turn up in either Rian Johnson or Benioff & Weiss’ trilogy? Maybe.
Having said that, rumours and speculations have suggested that Johnson’s trilogy will explore unchartered territories of the galaxy, while most of us fully expect Benioff & Weiss to take us back to the time of the Old Republic. Everything is up in the air right now, though, we can expect to get some clarification come Star Wars celebration in April.
