The annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) is one of two major events in the year when Sony announces its next major flagship smartphone. To that end, rumours are suggesting that the Japanese brand is ditching the XZ moniker, and that its next flagship will simply be called the Xperia 1.
Rumours of the Xperia 1 comes by way of serial leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks), who also included a high resolution render of Sony’s premium flagship. Sporting a deep, gorgeous shade of purple.
The image render of the Xperia 1 does tell us a few things. Firstly, the image confirms a previous report of the flagship housing a triple-camera setup. Second, the phone’s tall display is rumoured to be a 21:9 ratio “CinemaWide” display created specifically for watching films and show in wide screen mode.

More importantly, it looks like Sony has returned to using a thin and slim design for the Xperia 1. Instead of sticking to the phone design used with its Xperia XZ2 and XZ3 smartphones.
Unfortunately, Blass’ tweet didn’t provide any details about the phone’s hardware. Given Sony’s propensity to use the latest Qualcomm chipset in its flagships, many are speculating that the phone could house a Snapdragon 855 SoC at launch.
As an extra added bonus, Blass also shared an image of two other Xperia smartphones with the names Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus written at the bottom of the phone’s back. These phones look nearly identical to the original renders of the Xperia XA3, which is part of Sony’s mid-range Xperia lineup. Beyond the obvious dual camera setup seen in the render, there is sadly no additional detail about the phone.
Seeing how MWC 2019 is really just around the corner, it’s clear that we’ll have our answer from Sony then.
