For the first time ever, the Election Committee (SPR) has allowed members of the public to watch the vote counting process live via the Internet. This will be taking place at the upcoming by-election for the Cameron Highlands Parliament in Pahang on 26 January 2019.
This was revealed by the Chairman of SPR, Azhar Azizan Harun during a press briefing yesterday. The move was made as an initiative to make the vote counting process more transparent and to spread more awareness regarding the process to members of the public.
In a response to a question from media members during the briefing Q&A session, Azhar has pointed out that the live stream which is being done on a trial basis will be involving only one out of 88 polling streams due to the limitation of broadband infrastructure in Cameron Highlands.
Members of the public will be able to tune in to the live stream through SPR’s official social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram. This is certainly a rather interesting move by SPR as the nation’s election system and laws are now being subjected to a reform process which is expected to be completed before the next General Election.
