Aside from its unique magnetic-based slider body, another part of Mi Mix 3 that Xiaomi has discussed in length during the phone’s official launch in Beijing today is the phone’s rear camera. Even though it is not exactly new since the dual 12MP camera module was identical to the one on Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S but somehow the implementation on Mi Mix 3 was deemed better by DxOMark.
According to the team at the renowned imaging lab, the increase of the camera’s capabilities was mainly due to the tweaks that Xiaomi has implemented on the camera software and image processing for the Mi Mix 3. DxOMark further commented that the phone able to deliver good results for still photos in terms of autofocus, color reproduction, dynamic range, and flash performance.
When it comes to video recording, the experience is apparently similar to Mi 8 albeit slightly better in low-light thanks to the improvement Xiaomi has made to the camera’s stabilization system. Naturally, the camera is not exactly perfect though since DxOMark team has also pointed out some issues including visible noise and color banding in some scenes as well as inconsistent bokeh in Portrait Mode.
All in all, the imaging lab has awarded an overall score of 103 points to Mi Mix which positioned it higher than not only Mi 8 but also Apple iPhone X, Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and Huawei P20 on the DxOMark ranking. At the same time, the phone has the same score as per HTC U12+ and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 but was edged out Apple iPhone XS Max and Huawei P20 Pro.
