The Google News app for Android has a bug which causes it to download unnecessary amounts of data in the background. It’s a problem that’s been around since June, according to the Google News Help Forum.
In September, the issue was verified by a Google News community manager, but it seems that a fix won’t be coming anytime soon.
The app also continued downloading using cellular data despite the ‘Download via Wi-Fi’ setting being turned on. Extreme cases have seen over 20GB of data being downloaded, as a result.
This could lead to unexpectedly using up monthly data quotas, or in the case of certain pre-paid plans, lead to excess data use charges. At this stage, the only way to prevent this from happening is to disable background data and deleting the app.
