iOS 12 was released not too long ago, touting all-round improvements to all of Apple’s mobile devices. And yet, it’s already been jailbroken, and is suspected to cause the new iPhones, XS and XS Max to not charge when plugged in. While the devices are asleep. Now, there are reports saying that it’s causing iMessages to be sent to wrong people.
There’s apparently a new feature in iOS 12 that merges iMessage contacts with multiple numbers into a single thread. This is a great idea, if it was something that users could toggle. The problem is that the implementation didn’t quite achieve that, but instead ended up combining completely different contacts into one.
@AppleSupport iOS 12 sucks. Our text messages are all screwed up. My sons are coming through as my husband and vice versa. My mom texts me and it goes to my husband or sons phone. Also we see each other’s phone call history. WTH is going on?!

Looking at Twitter and the Apple Support forum, it appears that there are plenty of people being affected by this. Someone would have two people in their contact list merged into one, and any message sent to the combined thread will be received by the one who last sent a message to the affected user.
While many of the affected users happen to share Apple IDs, there are others who are also reporting the same issue. Even when the recipients are do not share the same Apple IDs. So there’s no real way to tell what’s going on until Apple says something about it.
