In a rather surprising change of heart, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that the cross-platform support for Fortnite which also known as cross play has been enabled on PlayStation 4. Hold your horses though; the feature is currently still in beta stage
While SIE stated that the open beta test for the new feature begins from today onwards, the company didn’t provide in-depth details regarding it though. Nevertheless, SIE did state that the cross-platform support for Fortnite includes “gameplay, progression, and commerce” between PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, and Mac as well as Android and iOS devices.
According to the company’s official blog, SIE has recognized that cross-platform experience now has significant value to gamers. The reason why SIE took some time to finally embrace such feature is due to the fact that it has a huge impact on the company’s existing policy.
Meanwhile, Epic Games is also working on several related settings for gamers that have created extra accounts in order for them to play Fortnite on multiple platforms to avoid problems such this. Such settings include the ability to unlink and relink a console from one account to another which should be available in a few days time.
In November, the developer will also release an “account-merging feature” to help gamers combine their Battle Royale purchases. In many ways, this is indeed another proof that Fortnite is such a force to be reckoned with at the moment.
