Two weeks since its global launch, the Canon EOS R has officially arrived in Malaysia. The camera is the company’s first full-frame mirrorless professional camera, and as such, comes with a brand new RF mount and a list of RF lenses.
Specs-wise, the new EOS R features a 30.3MP full-frame sensor that’s paired with a DIGIC 8 image processor. Additionally, it is also built with Canon’s Dual Pixel auto-focus points. Further, the camera has 5655 auto-focus points, which is covers approximately 80% of the sensor’s X-axis, and 100% of its Y-axis.
Circling back to the EOS R’s mount, the new RF mount is a new 12-pin connector versus the typical 8-pin connector that is typically used in other cameras. Meaning that you’ll definitely need to use one of the three new RF-to-EF adapters that Canon launched with the EOS R.
Ports-wise, the camera comes with the standard outputs. This includes a microphone and headphones port, a HDMI port, and a USB Type-C port that can be used to charge the camera’s battery.
Moving on, the EOS R also comes pack with some pretty impressive performance features. To start, the camera can now step its exposure level down to -6EV with an f/1.2 lens. This setting allows the EOS R to snap more detailed images in low light environments. To complement that perk, the EOS R has a native ISO range between 100 and 40000, which can be expanded to 50 and 102400 when it is required.
Due to its mirrorless nature, even the viewfinder of the EOS R is now EVF instead of the traditional OVF. There’s also a new multi-function bar that can be customised to handle specific functions, such as aperture or ISO adjustments on the fly. Even the multi-touch LCD display has been upgraded and can used to adjust the focus point of the camera on the fly. Simply by sliding your finger (or thumb) across any point on it.
The Canon EOS R will retail at an SRP of RM9888 for just the body. There’s also a package that includes a EOS RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM kit lens, and it comes with a retail SRP of RM14888.
In terms of availability, the Canon EOS R will be available for purchase on 9 October 2018. As part of the launch, Canon will be taking pre-orders of the camera beginning 26 September 2018 till 8 October 2018. Customers who pre-order either of the aforementioned packages during this period will also receive a one normal RF-to-EF mount adapter, a 64GB SD Card, and an LP-E6N battery pack.
On a final note, Canon had also launched three additional RF lenses at the event. These lenses were:
- RF 50mm F1.2L USM
- RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM
- RF 24-70mm F2L USM
At the time of writing, Canon did not provide any local pricing for the lenses.
