Prolific photography leak site Nokishita has shared images of the upcoming Canon mirrorless camera. Dubbed the EOS-R, the new full-frame camera is going against the recently announced Nikon Z-series mirrorless cameras.
Judging from the images, the new EOS-R will be smaller than its DSLR full-frame cousins by a significant margin. At the same time, it looks like the flange distance will be deeper than the Nikon or Sony cameras. On that note, the camera itself sports a 30.3MP full-frame sensor.
The controls for the EOS-R body looks to be a mix of the EOS-M, EOS DSLR and third-party influences. Gone is the marked PASM mode dial, and in its place are dials similar to the ones found on the EOS M5 camera. There’s also new controls on the back, which includes a rocker switch with side controls which function is right now still a mystery.
A flip-out display is included, and we hope Canon is making it touch-sensitive. Instead of the traditional LCD display, we can see a black background/white text display on the top of the camera.
Canon will reportedly also be announcing four native lenses for the EOS-R. The lenses are the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM, RF 50mm F1.2L USM, RF 28-70mm F2L USM, and the RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM. Do note that three lenses out of the four feature the L designation and the red ring on the lens. This signifies the lens are of Canon’s top-end lineup, similar to the white L-lenses that are already in the market. Along with the lenses, Canon will be launching three EOS-R to EOS-EF lens adapters. One will have a built-in control ring while another can accept drop-in filters.
Nokishita and Canon Rumours says that the EOS-R line is expected to be launched on 5 September 2018.
