The Samsung DeX dock is undoubtedly a novelty that made some heads turn, giving Galaxy smartphones users an alternative to the traditional desktop. Now it appears that the Korean giant might be giving its upcoming Galaxy Note 9 smartphone and Tab S4 tablet the ability to activate the Dex desktop experience without the need for the dock.
News about the feature was first reported by Italian site Android Galaxys, and was later confirmed by the sites WinFuture and TechnoBuffalo. The sites confirm that both the the phone and tablet will have the ability to use the DeX desktop UI by simply connecting the devices to a display via their USB Type-C port and a DisplayPort-enabled adapter.
Android Galaxys also mentioned that both the Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4 will have a “Dual mode” feature. Supposedly, this feature will allow users to use the devices as a connected screen in DeX mode.
It’s also possible that these devices can be used as a trackpad, either to scroll around or to scribble and draw with the S-Pen. Lastly, it’s likely that the devices will also come with some form of support for Linux on DeX.
So far, Samsung hasn’t officially said anything about this news, but seeing how its Galaxy Note 9 Unpacked event is just around corner, it’s very likely that we’ll be hearing from the company then.
