Samsung has demonstrated the capabilities of a new flexible OLED panel for smartphones. Certified by Underwriters Laboratories (an official OSHA testing company), the panel not only meets military standard for drop and shock tests but also surpasses them.
The new Samsung panel is coated with “an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it”. The overlay is a plastic panel, which will supposedly make it nearly indestructible.
The company has also released a video to highlight these capabilities. Showing a tester smack the panel with a mallet several times to prove its resistance to damage. Tests by Underwriters Laboratories also certifies that the panel is capable of surviving 26 continuous drops from a height of 1.2 metres. It was also tested at drops of up to 1.8 metres for good measure.
No products have been attached to the new flexible panel yet, and it doesn’t look like Samsung will be using it to create folding display either. The near future will more likely see a device that’s more resistant to falls; with the technology potentially directly competing with Corning’s Gorilla Glass.
