You can now play Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch, and in normal circumstances, this is very good news for Fortnite players. However, this is not the case for those who have linked their account to a PlayStation 4 system. Apparently, PS4 players cannot use the same account on the Switch.
If you try to log in to Fortnite on a Nintendo Switch with an Epic Games account that was used on the PS4 before, a message will pop up saying that the account is “associated with a platform which does not allow it to operate on Switch.” Not only is it not possible to use your hard-earned skins and emotes on a Switch system if you’re a PS4 player, you cannot cross-play either.
.@PlayStation, fix this.
Not allowing me to sign-in to Fortnite Switch with my Epic account because it's linked to PS4 is tone deaf and points more to fear than market dominance.
It does the opposite of what you want — it makes me think about moving to Xbox for Fortnite. pic.twitter.com/D9xqv9aWdF

Not surprisingly, many Fortnite players are furious at this. To make matters worst, unlinking your Epic Games account to your PlayStation account doesn’t seem to solve the issue either. It doesn’t even matter if you made your Epic Games account on PC: as long as you have played at least one game on the PS4 with the same account, you can’t resume your progress on the Switch.
Fortnite players’ anger at Sony isn’t unwarranted. It’s one thing to block cross-play between different platforms, but it’s an entirely different issue to not allow players to log in to a different system. Accounts syncing is one of the main appeals of Fortnite, and Sony is taking that away from players. At least, from those who wish to play on the Switch.
Sony and Epic Games have yet to comment on the situation, but we’ll definitely keep a close eye on this. Fortnite is an extremely popular game, so Sony’s next move will be very crucial.
