Xiaomi is set to launch the Mi 7 on 23 May and rumours are intensifying as the date draws nearer. The latest happens to be a digital render of the facial recognition module that’s supposedly being included in the phone.
The post onWeibo shows several different imaging sensors looks to be part of the package. The first looks to be an infra-red sensor, similar to what Apple as in its FaceID sensor module. A selfie camera sits next to the it, while a mystery third camera sits on the other side of the earpiece.
Next to the mystery camera is what reports are speculating is a dot projector; which will project points onto the user’s face for the system to pick up as data points. All of these will live in the notch that will be on the Xiaomi Mi 7.
Xiaomi is also reported to be throwing in a fingerprint scanner at the back of the Mi 7 as a secondary authentication system for the user. This is contrary to the earlier under-screen fingerprint sensor report. We have to wait and see if the new facial recognition system will perform as good and as secure as Apple’s after the Mi 7 launches.
