Google has updated its privacy policy in a way to make it easier to understand. This isn’t to say that anything has actually changed; but rather the language has been simplified for people who don’t speak perfect English.
The new policy also includes videos explaining what each section is about. These videos are extremely short, each lasting about 50 seconds, but do an adequate job in outlining each section.
If anything, this simplified privacy policy language will help people understand what’s going on and how Google handles their personal information. More importantly, it highlights just how much of today’s privacy policies are written by lawyers; and are not intended for common folk.
This updated language isn’t something that Google is doing out of nowhere. It’s meant to comply with the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation laws, which go into effect on 25 May. In other words, expect to see other companies make similar moves to avoid being fined in Europe.
