Your Instagram Stories game is about to get an upgrade. Instagram has debuted a new ‘Focus’ camera feature that will give users an artificial bokeh effect; blurring the background slightly to make the subject stand out more.
The bokeh effect is extremely popular these days, but usually difficult to achieve on smartphones without the support of dual cameras. Google got the formula right by using artificial intelligence to isolate the foreground and recreate the effect on the Pixel 2; showing the word that it can be using software solutions. Something that Instagram appears to have picked up on.
The feature is already available in Instagram latest 39.0 version on both iOS and Android phones. However, do note that not all phone will support this feature. The Focus mode works on Apple’s iPhone SE, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X. While Instagram only said that the Focus mode will only “selected Android devices,” GSMArena confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the Google Pixel 2 (naturally) will have this feature working perfectly.
