Monolith Productions has announced that it will getting rid of loot boxes, war chests, and all traces of microtransactions in Middle Earth: Shadow of War. The studio’s decision stems from the overall consensus of fans of the game; many cited that the presence of these ‘games as a service’ transactions were ruining the overall gaming experience for them.
In fact, many fans of the game actually compared the practice to being close to EA’s own predatory loot box mechanics in Star Wars: Battlefront II.
While it’s nice to see Monolith Productions addressing the issue, don’t expect the changes to be immediate. In its official blog post, the studio states that the update will only be arriving on 17 July 2018.
Until then, owners of the game can choose to either spend all of their hard earned in-game gold, or wait for the update which will then convert the currency into items.
