Given the announcement date, some might have thought that it was part of an elaborate April Fools joke. Rest assured, this is actually real: Cloudflare has introduced a brand-new public DNS resolver service with 1.1.1.1 as its IP address.
You might have noticed it but for those who didn’t, the 1.1.1.1 goes along with the launch date of the service since it has four 1’s and the US date format for 1 April is 4/1. The IP address alongside 1.0.0.1 was originally held by APNIC which then passed them to Cloudflare in exchange for the company’s network firepower for the usage of APNIC’s research team.
What made Cloudflare’s new service different from other similar services is its emphasis on users’ privacy. According to its announcement, the company will not be logging querying IP address permanently and would clean out all logs within 24 hours.
At the same time, the new service is apparently faster than the hugely popular Google DNS and OpenDNS. If alternative DNS resolver is essential to your internet experience, you can check out 1.1.1.1’s official website for more details on how to utilize it for your own device or network.
