Oculus Rift VR headsets mysteriously stopped working on 7 March, and reports have it that they are still offline. The headsets are receiving a failure to “reach Oculus Runtime Service” error, which the company is says is due to an expired security certificate.
Oculus is aware of the situation, and is working towards getting it fixed as soon as possible. “Hey everyone – This is an issue with our software certification that we’re still actively working on. For security, we use a certificate to ensure that the software you receive actually comes from Oculus. That certificate has expired, and we’re looking at a few different ways to resolve the issue. We’ll update you with the latest info as available. We recommend you wait until we provide an official fix. Thanks for your patience,” the company posted on its forum.
However, it appears that the expired certificate is blocking the regular software update path. Which means that the company cannot push out a fix like the normally would. A complication that may lead to a much longer wait time for the issue to be resolved.
Rifts are still offline at the time of this writing, which means that it’s been down for close to 12 hours with no end in sight.
