Warcraft III might be 15 years old this year, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped Blizzard from announcing a new event for the game. The Warcraft III Invitational is set to take place 27 and 28 February; and will debut a new major patch for the game.
Blizzard is not pulling its punches with the Invitational; which is set to be livestreamed over the Back2Warcraft Twitch channel. The company has recalled classic top level competitors of the game to participate in a series of matches that range from everything from Free-for-All mode to 4v4 team matches. Names like MaDFroG, Insomnia, and Tak3r are all set to return to Warcraft III for the two day event.
The announcement of the Invitational may come as a surprise, but Blizzard’s sudden focus on the game is not. Developers have been quietly pushing updates and patches for Warcraft III every year, which translates into a game that has received fixes until today.
It’s tempting to think that Blizzard is looking to push Warcraft III in the same direction as the original Starcraft. A game that was recently simultaneously released for free, and also receiving a paid remaster. Impressively, both versions are interchangeable and players are able to play against one another.
If anything, it will be interesting to see Warcraft III take centre stage once again for an event.
