Social media is, at best, a dangerous place to attempt to show up the competition. Something that Xiaomi has apparently learnt after asking its fans to vote on a poll comparing the Android One operating system with its own MIUI reskin.
The Twitter poll was likely directed at the Mi A1, Xiaomi’s first Android One based smartphone. Launched back in September 2017, the phone has proven to be especially popular. Mostly being a solid low cost smartphone that also features a pure Android experience; something that Google intended when it rolled out the operating system.
We presume that Xiaomi’s social media manager was hoping that the legion of Xiaomi users would flock to the poll and guarantee an overwhelming victory for MIUI. A move that backfired as the voting period ended with 57% of respondents favouring Android One.
It’s difficult to say why the poll was deleted, seeing as Xiaomi supports both forms of the operating system right now.
Admittedly, putting the poll on Twitter may have skewed the results in favour of a vanilla Android experience. Considering that Xiaomi’s largest market – China – doesn’t even have access to the micro-blogging platform. We expect that things might be different if the question was asked on Weibo.
