Apple’s next Pencil may support multiple devices rather than just the iPad Pro, and works on any surfaces. This is according to a new patent filed at the World International Property Organization (WIPO). The new stylus looks to be designed as a companion device for multiple Apple products, not justtablets.
Titled ‘Content Creation Using Electronic Input Device On Non-Electronic Surfaces’, the patent gives some hint on what the stylus can do. The stylus is said to work with sensors to determine its relation in real space and translate it on screen. This possibly means that the stylus can be used on any surface, not just a touch screen.
From the drawings, we can see that the stylus can be tracked via cameras and/or sensors mounted on laptops and desktop monitor. It can also be tracked via an external tracker connected to a computer. What is more intriguing is the stylus may also be used with devices such as smartphones and smartwatches alongside tablets and laptops.
Currently the Apple Pencil only works with the iPad Pro. If this patent bears fruit, we may see the new Pencil be paired with the iPhone, Macbook or even Apple Watch. This patent may not translate into a real product so do take it with a grain of salt.
