UPDATE – 7 Feb / 1230PM: Xiaomi Malaysia‘s official store on Lazada has finally include Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus as part of its offerings.
While their prices still remain the same as per last week’s revelation by DirectD, customers’ color options for Redmi 5 are no longer limited to just gold colorway as the store also offers the device in black and blue.
Same goes for Redmi 5 Plus which can be obtained in black, blue, and gold. At the same time, both devices can also be obtained at Authorized Mi Stores and Mi Zones throughout the country.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi Malaysia has also stated on its Facebook page that the 4GB/64 variant of Redmi 5 Plus will also be released in Malaysia. However, no actual release date was mentioned and it apparently will take quite some time before the phone arrives in our market.
ORIGINAL STORY – 2 Feb / 350PM:
After they were launched in China two months ago, the new Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are now officially in Malaysia. While Xiaomi itself has yet to announce their arrival in our market, the well-known retailer DirectD has announced that the Malaysian variant for both models now readily available at its outlets.
The first of their kind within Xiaomi’s Redmi series, both models are equipped with 18:9 full screen display. The Redmi 5 is the smaller out of two with its 5.7-inch HD+ display while the Redmi 5 Plus carries 5.99-inch FHD+ display.
In terms of firepower, the Redmi 5 carries a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 while the Redmi 5 Plus is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. For Malaysia, both models feature 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage.
Built with 3300mAh and 4000mAh battery respectively, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus do share the same 12MP PDAF rear camera and 5MP front camera. There is also front-facing soft-light flash on both devices.
Price-wise, the Redmi 5 is listed at RM 679 while the Redmi 5 Plus is priced slightly higher at RM 749. In terms of colorway, the Redmi 5 is limited to gold (see update above) while its bigger brother Redmi 5 Plus can be obtained in gold, black, and blue.
Both models come standard with 1 year of warranty from Xiaomi Malaysia. Given this revelation, expect both phones to be widely available in other retailers as well as Xiaomi Malaysia’s official online store shortly.
