Samsung Electronics has announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first 16-Gigabit GDDR6 memory module. The company mentioned that the introduction of its new memory module will strengthen its portfolio of DRAM products for the graphics and gaming market. Prior to this, Samsung Electronics had earlier announced the start of mass producing its new 2.4 Gbps 8GB HBM2 memory controller.

Samsung Electronics’ 16-Gigabit GDDR6 memory module is built using the 10nm process technology. Capacity-wise, the company’s new memory module comes in a memory density of 16Gb. It’s capable of bandwidth speeds 72GBps and a pin speed of 18Gbps – both of which translate to an increase in speeds of more than two times that of the older 8Gb GDDR5 module.

In addition to the increase in bandwidth speeds, the power consumption of Samsung’s 16-Gigabit GDDR6 memory controller has also been improved compared to the older GDDR5 module. To be more specific, the new memory module from Samsung now operates at merely 1.35V.

Those aside, the 16Gb GDDR6 module will most likely be used in high-end gaming graphics cards and products utilised in fields of artificial intelligence and etc. Despite this, it’ll probably still take quite some time before we’ll actually get to see GDDR6 being implemented inside graphics cards.
