Paladins: Champions of the Realm is generally considered to be the best free-to-play alternative to Overwatch. Now, developer Hi-Rez wants the game to challenge the current most played game on the internet: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Paladins: Battlegrounds claims to be the first ever “hero shooter battle royale”. Essentially, the game divides 100 players into teams and sends them out into a massive map. As far as we can tell, it then uses the same rules as PUBG; complete with shrinking safe zones to ensure people bunch up and start fighting.
The good news about Paladins: Battlegrounds is that players will probably get more mileage from their mounts in this mode. Allowing them to cover more ground while searching for enemies. The bad news is that it’ll probably require a lot more coordination than most Paladins players are used to.
There is loot to be collected (not that Hi-Rez has said what it will look like) and games are designed to last for 20 minutes or so. Which is rather short for a Battle Royale style game mode.
Paladins: Battlegrounds is set for a release later this year. We expect it to do about as well as Fortnite Battle Royale, in that it gets a core of loyal players.
