Konami has revealed details about the upcoming Metal Gear Survive; its first title in the franchise since parting ways with Hideo Kojima. The single player portion of the game will take on a mission based approach, and include elements from survival games.
The story of Metal Gear Survive parts ways with the original Metal Gear plot. Instead, players now take on the role of a survivor from the destruction of Mother Base at the end of Metal Gear Solid 5; where the entire base ended up sucked into a wormhole for no explainable reason.
This new protagonist is sent through the wormhole to investigate the incident, and must learn to survive in this new land (that curiously still looks like our world). New crafting mechanics are being introduced, allowing players to expand their base camp. Konami is promising more free form construction; meaning that players will be able to organise the camp to their liking.
Crafting recipes will have to be located while out on missions, but the announcement video also seems to indicate that the best loot will have to be earned in multiplayer mode.
It’s an interesting twist on the Metal Gear franchise, but some may argue that this is simply borrowing the name for the sake of a new game. Especially since the connection to the original plot is extremely weak. Still, it may be interesting to find out what Konami has in mind.
Metal Gear Survive will be holding an open beta test from 18 to 21 January for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game itself is set to launch for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on 20 February 2018.
