Facebook Introduces Messenger Kids, a Chat App Just for Kids

Facebook has a new app app and this time round, it’s made especially for kids. The social networking company recently launched a new Messenger Kids app, a chat app for kids to message one another. As with almost all apps made for kids, Facebook promises that Messenger Kids is safe, and has a bunch of parental control tools that provides “the level of control parents want”.

Messenger Kids is aimed at giving a digital platform for children to keep in contact with their friends and family. Co-developed with parents, kids and experts, parents can create an account for their kids using their Facebook account. Parents can then pick who their children can chat with, like parents, grandparents, cousins, and other kids with the app.

Messenger Kids Setup

So, what does Messenger Kids have that will attract young children? Filters, stickers, masks, sound effects and such of course. Messenger Kids has plenty of playful masks, emojis, GIFs, and drawing tools for children to use, and to bring conversations to live. In addition to video chat, kids can send photos, videos, or text messages with their parent-approved contacts. Other kids will need to have Messenger Kids installed to chat with one another, while adult relatives can chat with the kid using their normal Messenger app.

Sadly though, the app is only limited to the U.S. as a preview. It is only available on the App Store, and will be rolled out to the Amazon App Store and Google Play Store “in the coming months”. Will you let your young children use a Messenger app designed just for kids?
