Maybank just launched a new version of its mobile app: users can now login to their accounts with more biometric options. Previously, the app only accepts fingerprint authentication, and the new version adds face and voice recognition as well.
Dubbed Face ID (no, it’s not the same as the one found on the iPhone X) and Voice ID, these two new biometric options can be used by virtually any smartphone. Of course, there are minimum requirements: you’ll need a smartphone with at least a 2MP front-facing camera and a built-in microphone – for obvious reasons.
Just like Quick Touch – the app’s fingerprint authentication – users can only access their accounts and check their balances with Face ID and Voice ID. For security reasons, further transactions will require users to key in their passwords. According to Maybank, there are plans to allow users to authorise transactions with biometric authentication in the future.
As for how secure Face ID and Voice ID are, they appear to be pretty good. Logging in with either options is fast and seamless, and we were told that Face ID uses a form of “liveliness test.” So no, a photograph won’t be able to fool the facial recognition.
The new Maybank App is now available for download on the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store. If you have the app already installed, there should be an update for it.
