The CEO of a local telco in Malaysia was detained at the Dubai International Airport for drug possession. Reports on this are scarce at the moment, but it appears this figure served a prison sentence and was only sent back to Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
According to a report on TV3’s Buletin Utama earlier today, which was later corroborated by a report in Harian Metro, the figure was detained at the Dubai International Airport for possession on 18 September after landing in Dubai from Amsterdam.
The individual was then detained for two weeks at the airport detention centre for investigations, before being sent to the Al-Aweer Prison to serve his sentence. This figure has since been released and sent back to Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday (7 November).
Both reports did not reveal who this figure is.
The big four major telcos in Malaysia (Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile) have moved swiftly to confirm that their CEOs are not the unnamed individual.
UPDATE 11:50pm: Tune Talk CEO Jason Lo has released a statement after allegations surfaced that he was the individual who was detained. The statement is as follows:
“Here’s the story in case you didn’t know. I landed in Dubai, at the airport my friend tries to stop a fight. Then he gets hit and I jump the guy who turns out to be an undercover cop. I go to lock up and this guy stalls his statement for weeks. It was horrible. Not as horrible as coming out and hearing rumours of being locked up for every other reason under the sun.”
