The Google Assistant has been updated to allow users to identify songs through the app. This function originally introduced on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL – but has now rolled out to all devices with the Google Assistant installed. All users need to do is just call up Google Assistant, and ask ‘What song is this?’.
The Google Assistant will not only figure out the song, it will even present the search results with suggested apps to play the song back. It even gives options if you want to purchase the song on Google Play store.
A drawback with this service is that only songs with lyrics can be recognised easily through Google Assistant. Plus, the service supports limited number of languages right now.
We tested it with English, Mandarin and Japanese with no problems, but not Malay. Utada Hikaru’s ‘First Love’ was analysed without a problem, but the Imperial March resulted in an error in search.
Still, it is a handy tool to have at your fingertip for the moment you want to know what is the song playing.
