Valve has introduced digital Steam gift cards for users to share the love during the upcoming holiday season. These function in almost exactly the same manner as regular physical Steam gift cards, except that they are easier to obtain and provide a direct conversion of funds.
What is notable about these gift cards is that they are not limited by regions, allowing people to gift to friends in other countries. Circumventing region-locks that prevent the gifting of games. The only catch in this situation is that Steam will convert the value of the gift card to the recipient’s currency, i.e sending from Malaysia to Singapore will have the value changed from Ringgit to Singapore Dollars.
The other limitation for the digital gift cards is that they cannot be bought using Steam Wallet credits. Limiting their value in terms of being able to sell items on the Steam Marketplace and converting it into gifts for others. There’s no explanation for why this is the case, but it is likely something to do with the legalities of transferring currency across state borders.
In the event that the recipient of the gift declines it, the value will be refunded to the buyer. That said, the refund may come in the form of Steam Wallet credit if the original purchase method doesn’t support Steam’s refund.
Steam digital gift cards are already available through the Steam client. They come in denominations of RM15, RM30, RM75, RM150, and RM300. Just hit the option at the top left corner of the Steam store page to explore the option; all in time for the upcoming holiday season.
