Canon Announces PowerShot G1 X Mark III; APS-C Sensor Compact Camera With Dual-Pixel Technology

Canon has announced an upgrade to the G1X line of compact cameras in the new Powershot G1 X Mark III. This time around, Canon has managed to fit the APS-C sensor from the Canon EOS M6 into a weather-sealed compact camera.

Paired to the APS-C sensor is a fixed 24-72mm equivalent F2.8-5.6 lens. Also present in the G1X Mark III is the DiGiC 7 image processor – the same as the one in the EOS 77D. Plus Canon’s Dual Pixel technology is present in the latest compact camera – a great pairing for sharper, faster and more precise autofocus.

The design of the G1 X Mark III is different than its predecessor. Gone is the compact boxy body. Now it has a DLSR-like profile, with the hump on the top that contains a pop-up flash and the 2.36 million dot OLED viewfinder. The camera also features a 3.0 inch Vari-angle touch-screen LCD display.

One missing feature of the G1 X Mark III is 4K recording. Otherwise, it has all the hallmarks of a modern camera – 1080p60p recording, time lapse video, NFC/WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity, up to 9fps shooting speed, and for the first time – a Panoramic Shot Mode built in. It is also dust and weather sealed – perfect to-go partner for those hiking trips.

You will have to cough up a bit more money; the Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III is priced at US$ 1,299, or about RM 5,483 when it ships in November. No doubt we will be seeing this camera here in Malaysia, so look out for local availability soon.
