If you’re a Dota 2 fan in Southeast Asia, good news: the very first Dota 2 Major in 2018 is happening as early as January. Offering a whopping $1 million prize pool – that’s approximately RM4.2 million – Galaxy Battles Major will take place from 19 to 21 January 2018.
Unlike the first Galaxy Battles in Shenzhen, China, the upcoming tournament is recognised as a Dota 2 Major; it’s also organised by Fallout Gaming and Purpose Win this time around. Qualifiers for the Major will commence sometime in mid-November in six regions: Southeast Asia, China, Europe, North and South America, as well as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Interestingly, two slots in Galaxy Battles Major will be up for grabs by teams that placed first and second in New Blood Championships – an amateur Dota 2 tournament. Both teams will face two other teams that placed second in the China and European qualifiers in a Wild Card.
Of course, eight professional Dota 2 teams will be directly invited to this Major. So far, only four of the teams have been revealed, which include Newbee, Infamous Gaming, OG, and TNC Pro Team.
What sets Galaxy Battles Major apart from previous Dota 2 Major events is the fact that it “taps into more than just the viewership aspect of Dota 2.” At the event, a music festival will be taking place too, which features performances by various artists – even international ones.
On top of that, there will also be a “Dota 2 World” area. Touted as the first-ever Dota 2 themed activities ground, this particular area is said to offer theme park-like activities, resting pods and rest areas for attendees to take a break, as well as food and beverage zones. There will also be a sponsorship area where the organisers’ partners can feature their products, services and engagements.
Galaxy Battles Major does sound like a promising Dota 2 Major event, and it will be happening from 19 to 21 January 2018 at Philippines Arena, Bulacan – the world’s largest indoor stadium. Ticketing for the Major will be available from November onwards.
