Renders of Google’s upcoming Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have leaked hours before the official unveiling. From what we can tell the smartphones look to be an evolution of the previous Pixel phone rather than a revolution.
The Pixel 2 is manufactured by HTC while the Pixel 2 XL is manufactured by LG. The two smartphones are said to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 mobile platform (just as the Pixel debuted the Snapdragon 821). There will be 4GB of RAM and either 64 or 128GB of internal storage available as choices when the phone is officially launched.
Both smartphones will have a 12-megapixel rear main camera, as well as front-firing stereo speakers – a first for the Pixel line.
With a smaller 5-inch screen, the Pixel 2 is the smaller of the two. The 16:9 screen looks to be similar in dimension with last year’s Pixel, and reported to have a 1080p screen. The drawback of this design is the thick top and bottom bezels – reminiscent of Sony’s Xperia design. There is also the previously reported “Active Edge” feature, that may just be available for the Pixel 2 model.
The Pixel 2 XL meanwhile sports a larger, 18:9 ratio screen from LG. It may be the same screen from the LG G6, as it features rounded corners as well. Unfortunately this is not an edge-to-edge screen, so the phone still has a bezel around the screen. With an expected QHD+ resolution, the quality of the display will be top notch.
Out of the box, the phones will have Android Oreo pre-installed and will be receiving OS and security updates straight from Google. With the new Pixel image reveal, we noticed that Google has also tweaked the Pixel launcher as well. The Google Bar widget now sits just below the row of icons on the homepage. This widget can’t be moved in the current Pixel launcher, so the question is if this new location will be a boon or hindrance to the consumers looking to own the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.
An earlier rumour suggests that the phones will be priced accordingly:
- Pixel 2 with 4GB/64GB for US$ 649 (RM 2,720)
- Pixel 2 with 4GB/128GB for US$ 749 (RM 3,140)
- Pixel 2 XL with 4GB/64GB for US$ 849 (RM 3,560)
- Pixel 2 XL with 4GB/128GB for US$ 949 (RM 3,980)
