Back at the local launch of the Sony Xperia XZ1 and XA1 Plus last week, one device was sorely missing: the Xperia XZ1 Compact. While we were told that the compact flagship phone will be available Malaysia, we didn’t receive any tentative release date. Based on what we’ve just learned, however, the XZ1 Compact will very likely arrive here very soon.
In our routine search of SIRIM’s database, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is registered with the certification body under two companies: Sony Malaysia itself and Vmatrics Sdn Bhd. Interestingly, the Xperia XA1 Plus is registered with SIRIM at the same time too.
The Xperia XZ1 Compact is one of very few compact smartphones with flagship-tier hardware. It’s a 4.6-inch smartphone with a 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, and a 2,700mAh battery. Given the compact display and power efficiency of the 10nm Snapdragon 835, we imagine the XZ1 Compact’s 2,700mAh battery will return pretty respectable battery life.
Aside from that, the XZ1 Compact also feature the very same 19MP Motion Eye camera found on the larger Xperia XZ1: it’s capable of shooting slow-motion videos at 960fps. The XZ1 Compact’s front-facing shooter, on the other hand, is a “super wide-angle” 8MP camera.
There aren’t many compact smartphones as powerful as the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, so it may just be more appealing than the larger Xperia XZ1 – especially to those that prefer smaller phones. Now that it has been registered with SIRIM, we reckon the XZ1 Compact will be made available in Malaysia very soon.
