CCleaner is one of the most well-known tool when it comes to keeping your system clean. Despite the software’s legendary reputation though, its security has apparently been breached as its creator Piriform has revealed that two specific version of the CCleaner software were illegally modified without the company’s knowledge before they are released to public.
According to the company’s announcement, the specific software that were involved in the breach are the 32-bit version of CCleaner v5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud v1.07.3191. While both version were released in August, Piriform and its parent company Avast only managed to identify the breach last week.
In general, the illegal codes were designed to collect and transmit data to a server located in US. Working together with US authorities, they have managed to shut down the server but investigations behind the security breach are still going on which showed how critical the situation was for Piriform.
Meanwhile, do make sure to update your copy of CCleaner and CCleaner Cloud to the latest version in order to make sure that you are able to continue using them safely.
