Apple appears to have discontinued the Apple Watch Series 2 without telling anyone. The wearable that was announced last year is no longer available on the online store, having been replaced by the new Apple Watch Series 3.
It looks like Apple will be using the original Apple Watch (retroactively called the Series 1) as an entry level wearable for its portfolio. This should leave space for annual updates for the premium level Apple Watch.
That said, this is rather different from how it handles other products. For the most part, Apple is content to provide a price drop on past year devices and use those for the mid-range and entry level markets. This is evident from how it handles the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook lines.
Removing a device this early in its life cycle makes for an interesting precedent. We’ve reached out to Apple for a comment on this change, but have not yet heard back from the company.
For now, it looks like the Apple Watch Series 2 is no longer being sold; and people will just have to embrace to newer and better Apple Watch Series 3. That said, the Series 3 is not yet available in Malaysia. So any prospective customers will simply have to wait until the new watch arrives in Malaysia.
