A smartphone with a foldable display is inching towards fruition, says Samsung Smartphone Business Unit CEO Koh Dong-jin. The company is supposedly ready to release a foldable screen device sometime in 2018, rather than the expected 2019 time frame.
Koh also commented that the company has a clear roadmap for the Galaxy S and Note series, and yes, the foldable device is a part of those plans.
A curved display is nothing new for Samsung as the Edge series of phones features the said curved display, with the latest Galaxy S8 and Note 8 featuring the curved edge screens. Having a screen that can fold into itself however is still considered to be the Holy Grail, and represents a paradigm shift in display technology.
A major concern facing the production of foldable screens will be app support. Unless there is full compatibility with apps currently available on the Google Play Store, the usability of a large screen will be limited to certain applications. Commercialising the product is also another concern as this will be untested waters for Samsung.
Samsung has been talking about this technology for the past few years, and this news indicates that it is on track to deliver the technology to the masses pretty soon.
