The Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission has moved quickly stop Malaysians from being influenced by Fight of Gods. The commission has contacted Valve and requested that the game be geoblocked for Malaysians within 24 hours.
Fight of Gods received criticism from local religious bodies for its depiction of religious icons in what is effectively a brawler. The game features deities from historical religions like Zeus and Odin, but also includes contemporary religious icons like Jesus and Gautama Buddha.
Communications and Multimedia minister Dr Salleh Said Keruak has said that failure to comply with the request would result in further action being taken. He also said that the Taiwanese game degraded religions and threatened racial harmony within Malaysia. Salleh also clarified that creating and spreading offensive content is an offence under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
It’s uncertain what kind of action could be taken by the government against Steam, but there is a chance that it would be hit by massive fines. Of course, there is little that the MCMC can do about the actual developer of the game.
