It seems that the recent cryptocurrency mining craze isn’t just affecting PC gamers and enthusiasts; graphics cards manufacturers are feeling the burden too. One of them is Inno3D, which has apparently began distributing its graphics cards with a stern message for digital currency miners.
The message comes in a form of a sticker that says “this product is not designed for Crypto Mining.” That said, what’s even more worrying – for miners, at least – is the fact that Inno3D also mentioned that “we reserve the right to void the warranty if there is any damage associated with this application.” What the company is basically saying is that warranty claims may not be fulfilled if an Inno3D graphics card was found to be damaged by cryptocurrency mining activities.
As most of our beloved readers may have already known, graphics cards used in digital currency mining activities usually run for abnormally long durations. Because of this, those graphics cards tend to have “complications” a lot sooner than if they were used in casual scenarios (gaming, rendering, etc). This in turn results in a high volume warranty claims from miners to manufacturers like Inno3D.
Logically, a high volume of RMA request from consumers will result in manufacturers having to incur higher operating costs for repairs and/or replacements; this is exactly why Inno3D issued the aforementioned warning. That said, we’re not quite sure how a manufacturer can determine whether a graphics card was actually damaged from cryptocurrency mining activities or not. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if other manufacturers will issue similar warnings to its consumers in the future.
