Thanks to a couple of eagle eye folks in Silicon Valley, they managed to spot Apple’s self-driving car which is currently undergoing testing in California with new equipment according to a report by MacRumors. The photo clearly shows additional equipment such as cameras, radar, GPS, and LiDAR have been installed on the roof of the Lexus RX450h.
Dubbed as Project Titan, the test car joins other automotive and tech companies as they further gain more test miles in bringing the self-driving technology to maturity. Compared to other test cars, the equipment on top of the Lexus looks extremely bulky and with multiple cameras protruding out.
Aside from just testing out cars on the road, Apple is also rumoured to be setting up an intercampus shuttle service which runs on autonomous shuttles to ferry employees between the two locations. Having an autonomous vehicle to ferry people around in campus is what Michigan University is aiming to do as well and Google had their self-driving car rack up miles of testing on their own campus land as well.
Currently, Apple also leases the Lexus RX450h from Hertz to test self-driving technology in San Francisco. Hertz manages the fleet and performs maintenance on the vehicles for Apple as to how AVIS manages the fleet of vehicles for Waymo’s autonomous technology testing as well.
