MediaTek is expected to announce two new smartphone CPUs at the end of August; the Helio P23 for the midrange smartphones and the Helio P30 will be for the higher end models. Both will be made by TSMC using the 16 and 12 nanometre process nodes respectively.
With a rumoured eight ARM Cortex A53 CPUs running at 64-bit and a PowerVR 7XTP GPU, the Helio P23 is destined for the midrange market. It supports 2K displays, a Category 7 LTE model with download speeds of up to 300Mbps and dual-camera configurations. We can expect many impressive mid-rangers coming soon our way with this chip.
The Helio P30 on the other hand is the more powerful of the two, with eight-cores in two clusters on the CPU. One cluster will have four ARM Cortex A72 processors and the other four ARM Cortex A53 CPUs. An integrated Image Processor will have support of up to 25-megapixel image resolution. Meanwhile a Category 10 LTE modem should support up to 600Mbps download speeds.
Performance wise the new processors are expected to compete against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450, but at a lower price point for the manufacturers. We can expect the two new chipsets will be featured in smartphones from Chinese manufacturers such as Vivo, OPPO and Gionee.
