The Google Pixel has arguably one of the best smartphone camera performances in the market, and now, even non-Pixel devices can take advantage of the Google phone’s excellent camera app. However, there are some limitations: only recent flagship smartphones can use the software.
Developed by Ukrainian developer B-S-G of the 4PDA forum, the modified Google Camera app will work on smartphones powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, 821 or 835 chipset. Essentially, this brings Google’s impressive HDR+ image processing to these devices.
XDA Developers confirmed that the modified Google Camera app works on the OnePlus 5 – as well as the 3 and 3T – the LG G6, and even the Samsung Galaxy S8. Based on the site’s testing, the camera app definitely brings tangible improvements in image quality.
Of course, with any modified APK, there’s a risk the Google Camera app has some security vulnerabilities. XDA Developers, however, can confirm that it is “safe to install” after looking into the app’s code.
If you’d like to try out the modified version of Google Camera, you can download it from XDA Developers, which is rehosting the app’s APK. Although the app will theoretically work with any Snapdragon 820, 821 or 835 smartphone, note that there’s always a chance some devices will have trouble running it.
