Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin has unveiled a mobile app for the Kuala Lumpur 2017 SEA Games as part of an effort to make the event more accessible to the public. The name of the app is quite a mouthful, appearing in the app store as “KL2017 – 29th SEA Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games”.
The KL 2017 app provides an overview of not only the sports involved in the 29th SEA Games; but also travel information for foreign visitors who might be in town for the occasion. There’s also supposed to be an AR function built into the app that reveals information about live scores and medal tallies. However, we haven’t been able to take a look at how it works since more than half the app is still under construction.
What does work is the news and image gallery sections. Providing updates on local athletes and our buildup towards the games. The pictures in the gallery are mostly from promotional events, although we expect more to appear when the games actually begin.
Unfortunately, the UI of the app feels very cluttered. Bright colours are everywhere and don’t draw the eye to anything in particular. The fact that the tiles are laid out in two vertical columns on serves to make things harder to follow. It’s almost like a desktop website squashed down into a tiny smartphone display. Oh, and the ticketing information is just a link to the official KL 2017 website.
The KL2017 – 29th SEA Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games app is available on both Android and iOS.
