Google appears to be testing autoplay videos on desktop search results. The test isn’t widespread, and was only spotted by a handful of people. It’s possible that the test is also limited in geographic region. Which would further reduce the chance of it being noticed.
Thus far, the videos have only appeared for movie trailers. They have also played without sound, further reducing how intrusive they are. It’s difficult to say what Google has planned, but it is certainly quite far along with this particular “feature”.
The internet giant issued a statement saying that “we are constantly experimenting with ways to improve the Search experience for our users, but have no plans to announce at this time.”
Autoplay videos are fast becoming the bane of the internet experience. Especially those that fail to mute the video and impose it on viewers. Facebook is supposedly looking into introducing audio into its autoplay videos. Which might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back when it comes to the social media site.
