The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt Red has become the victim of a data breach. A hacker has claimed to have stolen files regarding the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 game; and is attempting to extort money out of the company.
CD Projeckt Red issued an official statement over Twitter, admitting to the theft of the internal files. However, the company has maintained that the files in question are from early development on the game and do not represent the current state of the title. It has also said that it will not be giving into the demands of the hackers.

Fans of The Witcher series are providing a lot of sympathy for their favourite developer. It’s unlikely that this cyberattack has any impact on the final outcome of Cyberpunk 2077; even if the hacker releases the stolen files on the internet.
Still, it is also a sign of more hackers looking to make a quick profit by holding information ransom. CD Projekt Red is not the first company to suffer from this sort of data breach, and it won’t be the last.
