Samsung looks to be on course to miss its estimated release date for the English speaking version of Bixby. According to the Wall Street Journal, the AI is still struggling to understand English syntax and grammar; leaving it without the polish needed for a full scale launch.
According to the newspaper, Samsung is most likely to launch the digital assistant some time in the summer. This would be several weeks after the original expected launch at some point in the spring of 2017.
The company is expanding its US test base, which indicates that it is still quite a way from getting the AI to understand normal human speech. To be fair, contextual understanding is something that all digital assistants struggle with.
Other companies have thrown years into speech recognition research in order to reach the levels that they are at now. It’s understandable that Samsung is going to take a lot of extra time in getting it right.
