The HTC U Ultra recently received a price cut in Malaysia, reducing its retail price down to RM2,599. If the lower price tag wasn’t enough to entice you, HTC has brought in a new variant of the device into Malaysia: the limited edition HTC U Ultra Sapphire Edition.
As its name suggests, this variant of the U Ultra sports a sapphire glass display, and it’s a very, very durable glass. In fact, Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything did a durability test on this limited edition U Ultra, and it is indeed as scratch-resistant as a sapphire crystal wristwatch.
Aside from the more scratch-resistant display, the U Ultra Sapphire Edition also sports double the storage of the standard model at 128GB. Other specifications of the device, however, remain the same: it still has a 5.7-inch 1440p Super LCD 5 display, a 2.05-inch 1040 x 160 secondary display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor paired with 4GB of RAM, 12MP rear and 16MP front-facing cameras, as well as a 3,000mAh battery.
Naturally, the HTC U Ultra Sapphire Edition costs more than the RM2,599 standard model: it retails at RM2,999, the very same price point the regular model used to go for when it was initially launched in Malaysia.
If you don’t like the idea of a screen protector, the very scratch-resistant sapphire display of the U Ultra Sapphire Edition may just appeal to you, but do note that sapphire is more brittle than glass. If you were to drop it face first, the likelihood of the display shattering is higher.
