Alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung’s latest accessories in the Galaxy ecosystem will also be coming to Malaysia. These include the Samsung Gear 360, Gear VR with Controller, and the DeX station.
The DeX station is a small pocket-sized dock. It features an HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports, and an ethernet port. Power is provided over a USB Type-C port. Samsung included its Adaptive Fast Charging technology to keep the Galaxy S8 or S8+ topped up with power for long working sessions; and a cooling fan to manage heat concerns.
When docked, the DeX station creates a desktop environment with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse for greater productivity – all powered by the Galaxy S8. Samsung has collaborated with Microsoft and Adobe to enable compatibility with Microsoft Office and Lightroom mobile. More importantly, DeX also allows users to connect to virtual desktops from vendors like Citrix, VMware, and AWS.
Meanwhile, the Gear VR with Controller was co-developed with Oculus was announced back at MWC 2017. It is still pretty much the same headset that Samsung launched alongside the Galaxy Note 7, but a new addition is the Gear VR Controller.
The new controller is designed to add another level of immersion by providing Gear VR users an intuitive way to further interact in virtual environment. Through the Samsung Gear VR Controller, multiple forms of motion-based interactions can now be achieved in supported Gear VR titles including the ability to point, drag and drop, tilt, shoot and more.
Finally, the Samsung Gear 360 packs two fish-eye lenses with , each paired to a 8.4 megapixel f/2.2 sensor. When it comes to video, the new Gear 360 records in MP4 (H.265 encoding) format at 24fps with a resolution of 4096 x 2048. As for photos, the Gear 360 takes 15MP stills by stitching images together.
Since the Samsung Gear 360 (2017) has a smaller body, it also has a smaller 1,160mAh battery instead of a 1,350mAh cell found in the original Gear 360. It now also supports a higher microSD card capacity up to 256GB (originally 200GB). Moving on from microUSB, the 2017 Gear 360 now also uses USB Type-C (2.0).
All three products will be available in Malaysia alongside the Galaxy S8 and S8+ next week. The Gear VR with Controller will retail for RM499, while the Gear 360 is priced at RM999 – both products will also be offered with an attractive bundle during the upcoming Galaxy S8 roadshow. Finally, the DeX Station will be priced at RM459.
