Google recently announced that its YouTube Kids app is now available on selected smart TVs, and is coming soon to Android TV. The YouTube Kids app, a kids-friendly version of Google’s video streaming service, was previously available as a mobile app only.
Google first launched YouTube Kids about two years ago. It finally came to Malaysia last October and is currently available in 26 countries. Google says that it has over 30 billion views and over 8 million weekly active viewers, and all these users will finally be able to enjoy watching child-friendly content on the big screen.
YouTube Kids app will be available on:
- All 2015 – 2017 LG webOS TVs via LG content store
- All 2013 – 2017 Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-Ray Players that have access to the Samsung App Store
- 2016 – 2017 Sony TVs (except for Android TV) via firmware update
While the main YouTube app has a filter that lets parents filter out unwanted content, it is not perfect. Sometimes, videos with vulgarities still get through the filter, which is why the company launched YouTube Kids. Of course, no filter is 100% accurate, so it’s always wise to check what your children are watching so that you can flag content that you are concerned about.
